Vice-President
of the Supreme Court
KAPOSVÁRI Bertalan was born in 1939 in Budapest. Having
received his degree in law, he worked as a counsel
between 1963 and 1966, whereupon he became a trainee
at the Military Court of Budapest as a regular member
of the army. Having passed the professional legal
exam he was appointed judge and worked at various
military courts in the country and at the military
court of the capital. From 1974 until 1980 he worked
at the Ministry of Justice. Then he joined the Supreme
Court and adjudicated in its Military Department,
where after some years he was appointed head of chamber.
Due to the transformation of the judicial system his
military service relation was dissolved in 1991 and
he became a chamber leader in the Criminal College
of the Supreme Court. From 1998 until 2004 he was
head of the disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court.
He was appointed Vice-President of the Supreme Court
on 12 January 2005.
In
1997 the President of the Republic of Hungary promoted
him brigadier general. Besides his judicial activity
he has published several studies on criminal substantive
and procedural law. Between 1972 and 1974 he taught
at the Police Academy. He was editor of the Compilation
of Military Court Decisions and he is a member of
the professional exam committee. Act III of 2003 on
the disclosure of the secret service activities of
the previous regime and on the establishment of the
Archives of State Security Services provided for the
drawing up of a list containing especially important
documents of national security. He has been carrying
out this task since July 2003 on behalf of the Supreme
Court. In addition he is a man of letters, who has
published several short stories and novels and who
is a member of the Hungarian Writers' Association.
