With
the participation of more than 200 election officials
form 40 countries, we organize the 14th Annual Conference
of the Association of Central and Eastern European Election
Officials (ACEEEO) and the 3rd International Meeting of
Global Elelection Organizations (GEO) in Siófok from 14
September to 17 September 2005.
The ACEEEO, founded in 1991, has 22 member states in the
region and cultivates partnership with all the international
organizations in the field of elections, especially with
the UN, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the EU and the
IFES (International Foundation for Election Systems).
The aim of the Association is the holding of free and
fair elections in the region, the establishment of permanent
election committees and the elaboration of legal standards
for democratic elections.
The 3rd International Meeting of the Global Election Organizations
(GEO) – previously held in Canada and Mexico – is now
hosted by Hungary. The main purpose of the GEO is to enable
the election organizations of the world to exchange their
experiences and achievements regarding democratic elections
and election administration.
One of the main topics of this very Conference is „The
role of courts in the judging of electoral disputes”.
From the US presidential elections of 2000 to the Ukranian
presidential elections of last year, the question of legal
redress emerged several times during different elections
and proved to be a sensitive issue. Therefore, we think
that the exchange of experiences would greatly enhace
the work of election experts in this field.
Another significant topic on the agenda is the “Questions
of electronic voting”. The constant development of Information
Technology has an inevitable impact on administrative
systems as well, thus every phase of the election procedure
may be supported by IT solutions nowadays. The aim of
the Conference is to provide the professionals with an
overall picture of these challenges.
The
conference will be opened by Mr. András Holló, President
of the Hungarian Constitutional Court.
In
the course of the technical exhibition related to the
Conference, various devices of election administration
support will be introduced.
