Elections in Lithuania are held on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage, by secret ballot. The citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who, on the day of the election, are 18 years of age have the right to vote. The President of the Republic is elected for a five-year term. Any citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who is at least 25 years of age on the day of the elections may stand for election as a member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (141 seats; 71 members are elected by popular vote, 70 are elected by proportional representation) - a candidate is considered elected when the majority of voters participating in the elections vote for him/her in the polls. Seimas members are elected for a four-year term. Any citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who is at least 21 years of age on the day of the elections may stand for election as a member of a municipal council in multi-member constituencies according to the party lists. Members of municipal councils are elected for a three-year term.
