The Parliament is bicameral, it consists of an upper house, the Senate or Senat (100 seats; members are elected by a majority vote on a provincial basis – by basic, universal and direct, secret suffrage – to serve four-year terms), and a lower house, the Sejm (460 seats; members are elected under a complex system of proportional representation – majority system – to serve four-year terms). Every Polish citizen who is over 18 has the right to vote and those who are over 21 and have lived in Poland for five years may be elected. Citizens living abroad can also cast their votes at the polling stations, established by the representatives of the Polish diplomacy. General elections are supervised by the national electoral commission and conducted by the national electoral office. The validity of the parliamentary elections is determined by the supreme court.
