The
Georgian Council of State, which was established in 1992,
has renewed the Constitution of the country of 1921. In Georgia
parliamentary elections were held in 1992 then in 1995. As
a result of renewing the legislation Georgia has become a
Presidential Republic with a single-chamber parliament. The
235 representatives in the Parliament are elected for four
years. The Parliament is the supreme organ of power of the
country and the legality of its election is insured by the
Constitution and other laws. Elections are conducted in a
mixed electoral system of majority and the proportional distribution
of the votes. In 1999, in the last parliamentary elections,
73 candidates were elected on the basis of the majority of
votes and 150 of them on the basis of the proportional distribution
of the votes.
