Elections in Lithuania are held on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage, by secret ballot. The citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who, on the day of the election, are 18 years of age have the right to vote.
Any person who is the citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and has lived in Lithuania for at least the past three years and has reached the age of 40 prior to the election day may be elected President of the Republic. The President of the Republic is elected for a five-year term.

Any citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who is at least 25 years of age on the day of the elections may stand for election as a member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. Half of the Seimas members are elected in a multi-member constituency according to party lists, after the voters establish the final order of succession of candidates on the list by ballot; the other half of the Seimas members are elected in single-member constituencies - a candidate is considered elected when the majority of voters participating in the elections vote for him in the polls. Seimas members are elected for a four-year term.
Any citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who is at least 21 years of age on the day of the elections may stand for election as a member of a municipal council in multi-member constituencies according to party lists. Members of municipal councils are elected for a three-year term.
