Elections
to the National Council of the Slovak Republic are regulated
by Act No. 80/1990 Coll. of the Slovak National Council on
Elections to the Slovak National Council as amended, which
defines the system of proportional representation. The territory
of the Slovak Republic for the elections to the National Council
of the Slovak Republic is considered as one election district.
The citizens of the Slovak Republic, who are over 18 years
of age and are in the territory of the Slovak Republic on
the day of the elections have an active right to vote. A condition
for passive election right, besides having the citizenship
of the Slovak Republic, is being over 21 years of age and
having a permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak
Republic.
The
elections are conducted by the election bodies consisting
of the representatives of candidating political subjects.
Political parties, political movements and their coalitions
may candidate in the elections. The validity of the candidate
list is a condition for their registration. The Highest Court
of the Slovak Republic is entrusted to decide over appeals
against the decisions of the Central Election Commission on
non-registration in the candidate list.
The results of the elections to the National Council of the
Slovak Republic are announced by the Central Election Commission,
which at the same time issues a certificate of election to
every elected candidate. If a mandate gets vacant during the
term of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, it shall
be obtained by a substitute from the same political party.
